Lagoa do Abaeté

Description

The lagoon of Abaeté is a lagoon located in the environmental protection area Parque Metropolitano Lagoas e Dunas do Abaeté , in the Itapuã neighborhood, in Salvador , Bahia , Brazil .

Etymology

"Abaeté" originated from the term tupi abaîté , which means "terror, horror". It is a reference to the fact that the lagoon is considered a haunted place . A Dorival Caymmi song dedicated to the lagoon says: "Early in the morning, if a washerwoman / Will wash in the Abaeté / He is blessed because he says he hears / hears the drunkenness of the batucajé." ("Batucajé" is a profane dance to the sound of drums)

History

Lagoon of mysteries and charms, many legends have arisen around the dark waters of this freshwater mass surrounded by the very sands of immense dunes. The ancient lagoon of Itapuã, concealed in the midst of natural beauty, was revered as sacred by the adepts of candomblé .

Visited by many tourists, everyone feared bathing in their waters, which were said to "swallow" in mysterious swirls, whose points were known to a few. Eventual drowning deaths only added to this mysterious aura.

The fact is that, because of its fresh water, supported by springs that appear in the midst of the dunes - and not by damming the rain, as was once believed - the Abaeté was used by launderers who, at its banks, helped to keep alive many of the ancestral traditions that enrich Salvador's culture.

In the late 1970s , with improved access to the north and the construction of the Salvador International Airport , several developments were being installed in its vicinity and the neighborhood of Itapuã itself grew. This, added to hundreds of irregular occupations, caused a true devastation in the dunes, with the withdrawal of its sands for the construction of clandestine and uncontrolled form.

To contain the predatory action of the place and preserve the natural beauties of the lagoon, the area of environmental protection was created.

Park

The Parque Metropolitano Lagoas e Dunas do Abaeté was created on September 3, 1993, with an area of 12, 000 square meters. Besides the dunes and the lagoon, it has an urbanized center, where the washerwomen have the headquarters of its association.

Location and access

Located more than 10 kilometers from the center of the state capital, the main access road starts at the Ibiama slope in Itapuã, and goes up the slope of the Mirante, which ends right at the Abaeté viewpoint, from where you can have a broad view of the park. It is ten miles north of Salvador and three kilometers south of Lauro de Freitas , at approximately 12 ° 59'S and 38 ° 30 'W.
