History

Local leaders

One famous figure of Pasir Puteh is tok janggut also known as Tok beard because of his long white beard. A rice farmer and merchant, he led a peasant uprising in Malaya in 1915 against British colonial rule, which began in 1909.

Among the effects of colonial rule is the loss of power for the heads of district and the introduction of other forms of taxation of land which was not welcome. As former chairman of the Pasir Puteh followers, Tok Beard was affected by both of these steps. In April 1915, he led a boycott of the tax and then a rebellion (bersenjaga) comprising nearly 2,000 farmers simply to expel the British. British troops from Singapore were brought in to quell this rebellion that lasted for a month. Tok Beard was killed in the last attack at his camp, and his name is still alive as an early hero of the struggle against British colonialism.

Before this place was known as Pasir Putih, it was known as Pangkalan Limbungan. The town of Pasir Putih derived its name after Sultan Muhammad IV visited this place. The Sultan was very impressed to see the white sand shining along the riverbanks. Hence in 1911, the Sultan declared the name of this place as Pasir Putih, which meant white sand. This is the place where a Kelantan warrior, Tok Janggut, raised an army of Malay warriors to oppose the introduction of taxation in Kelantan.
