Rio de le Becarie

Description

The Rio delle Beccarie (in Venetian rio de le Becarie, butcheries canal) is a canal of Venice in the sestiere of San Polo. It is also called rio de la Pescheria (or Pescaria, fishmonger canal).

Description

The Rio delle Becarie is about 255 meters long. It extends the rio San Aponal northeast towards its mouth in the Grand Canal.

Origin

This canal was called in the twelfth century rio Magadesia, from the Magadesia or Arbore family, and in the fourteenth century rio di Ca 'Bellegno, after an eponymous family. In 1339 the public beccherie (butcheriess) of the Rialto were there, which finally gave the name to the rio. The corporation of the beccai was formed under the patronage of San Matteo in the church of the Rialto.

The modern neo-gothic style building of the Pescaria was only built in 1908 on a project of Carlo Laurenti and Domenico Rupolo.

Situation

  • This rio leads to the Grand Canal along the Pescaria (fish market).
  • It runs along the Molin Cappello Palace.
